Pepper or Xero?

Compare a self-hosted billing and evidence workflow with cloud accounting, bank reconciliation and currency conversion.

Updated

Xero and Pepper meet different needs after an invoice leaves your desk. Xero's cloud accounting includes bank reconciliation and financial reporting. Pepper records invoice settlement and purchase evidence, then exports a package for an accountant. Pepper does not supply a general ledger or reconcile the bank.

Xero's US pages describe bank-feed or statement-import workflows and matching transactions to accounting records. Its multi-currency page describes exchange rates, conversion to a base currency and reporting. Multi-currency availability depends on the plan; regional offers differ. Test what happens to a bank receipt

Suppose you issue a USD 900 invoice and the bank credits a EUR account. Pepper preserves the USD invoice and lets staff record its settlement in that currency. It does not work out the EUR conversion, exchange difference or fee. Your accounting process needs to handle those parts.

Xero documents base-currency conversion as part of its multi-currency accounting. If that is a regular part of your work, include the conversion and reconciliation in your product trial. Confirm your bank and local plan before committing. Xero's multi-currency explanation.

Requirement Pepper's released scope
Agree and bill fixed-price work Scope versions, milestones, staff approval and invoice drafts
Track what a customer owes Issued invoices, entered payments, credits and refunds
Keep supplier evidence Manual purchase amounts and attached receipts
Hand a period to an accountant Calendar month, quarter or year with PDF, CSV and available source files
Maintain the books Separate accounting process required

Pepper's period figures keep currencies separate. They do not form a consolidated profit-and-loss statement or decide tax owed. See the currency workflow.

Compare responsibility as well as price

Xero is a cloud service; consult its current US offer or the corresponding page for your region. Confirm required plans, bank connections and external apps in that offer.

Pepper costs $99 for the first year for one business's production installation, with source code and a perpetual license. One year of updates and six months of product support come with the purchase. Update access renews automatically at $199/year. Cancel to stop future charges; your installed copy keeps working. Renewal does not extend support. You arrange hosting, email and maintenance.

Keep the accountant in the trial

Ask the accountant to review one sample Pepper export before changing the process. Include a correction and a foreign-currency document if you use them. Pepper has no native Xero synchronization or dedicated Xero migration tool.
